Types of Darts Bets: Outright Winner Betting

There are a bunch of options available when it comes to darts betting, but there’s nothing quite as satisfying as picking the outright winner.

That doesn’t just mean a match winner either. It could be the outright winner of the tournament as a whole, or the winner of a particular quarter. Lots to get stuck into, but that’s what DartsTips.com is here for.

Outright Winner Betting Explained

What is Outright Winner Betting in Darts?

Outright Winner Betting in darts can mean different things and cover different markets, but ultimately this is you picking a player to win. It could be one match, it could be a quarter (one section of a tournament) or the actual winner of the whole event.

DartsTips.com will have you covered on the Outright Winner market with regular previews of the biggest events in darts – and here’s a bit more info on how it’s done.

Outright Winner Betting Examples

Match Winner
The easiest and most common bet to place. Who wins the match? Imagine in this case that Luke Littler and Luke Humphries meet in the final of the PDC World Championships.

Littler is the odds-on favourite at 1.72, with Humphries the narrow outsider at odds of 2.10. If you bet £10 on Littler and he wins, you’ll pocket a return of £17.20 and a profit of £7.20.

TOP TIP: In early rounds of tournaments, combine multiple odds-on picks into an accumulator for a good chance of a bigger return.

Tournament Winner
A real test of knowledge… who’s gonna win it all? You can continue to back the outright tournament winner throughout the event, but the bigger value comes pre-tournament when you have a full complement of players to choose from.

Let’s use Gerwyn Price as an example. Price might begin the tournament at odds of 11.0 (or 10/1 if you prefer). Wager £20 on ‘The Iceman’ to win and if he does so, you’ll win £220.

As the tournament progresses and Price advances, those odds will decrease – especially if players like Littler or Humphries are eliminated.

Quarter X Winner
Similar to the above, events can be split into quarters which opens up another betting market. A player might have a nice draw that will enable him to advance through the first few rounds before meeting one of the tournament favourites.

Let’s take prospect Gian van Veen for example, who’s 33.0 to win the tournament, but a more realistic 9.0 to win Quarter 4. You can back Van Veen to take out his early competition for a winning return.

DartsTips.com Top Tip:

Each-Way Betting is your friend too, meaning you can still get a winning return if your Outright Tournament Winner bet loses in the Final. For players at short odds, it’s not worth doubling your stake for a minor return – but anything at odds of 4/1 above could lead to a profit or your stake back.

When to Use Outright Winner Bets

Pre-Tournament
This is when the odds are at the biggest and best, meaning you can extract value on every player… even the tournament favourite!

Mid-Event
Is one player suddenly looking unstoppable, with the bookies yet to catch up? Don’t be afraid to back another tournament winner – it’s just giving you extra chances to win.

Quarter Betting
A great option when the bracket looks uneven, with one section of the draw perhaps weaker than another. Your selection might have an easy path through to the semi-finals.

Outright Betting Darts FAQ

Q. What is outright betting in darts?

Outright betting is wagering on a player to win. This could be who will triumph in a particular match, who will lift the trophy or even to win a certain section of the draw.

Q. Can I place outright bets once a tournament has started?

Yes. Bookmakers update outright odds round by round, so you can back players mid-event. This can enable you to go back in on your pre-tournament pick or hedge your bets by backing another player at a tempting price.

Q. How does quarter betting in darts work?

Think of this as a mini-tournament. You pick a player to win their quarter of the draw and if they do so, you’ll win the bet – regardless of how the tournament pans out afterwards.

Q. Can I use Outright Winner Betting in accumulators?

Yes – betting on multiple match winners in an acca can prove fruitful, combining multiple favourites to advance past lower seeds in early rounds. You could also combine every quarter winner into an acca or Lucky 15 for big returns.
